Posted on September 7, 2018 by AdminSeptember 7, 2018
Sunshine Sound Podcast Christine Mathias

Christine and Tom are moving to New Mexico! This isn’t the end of the Sunshine Sound Podcast, but this is the final episode in the San Diego run (although, when we take this thing on tour, we certainly be back). To switch things up, and to cap off this San Diego experience, Tom interviews Christine. In this podcast, we chat about why we started the podcast, reflect on the experience, and the local music scene. Christine also talks about her experience with music, from playing jazz in undergrad, to giving up music completely, then renewing the love of performing in law school, of all places. We cover Christine’s experience playing with Freight, Doll Fight, Brown Gold, and Steady Betty in Vermont, then forming Denim Robot in Boston/San Diego. We talk about songwriting, writer’s block, insecurities, learning an instrument as an adult, and some other stuff. Plus, we’ll listen to a … Continue reading →

punk rock food drive

In this episode, Christine interviews Jason and Chris, organizers of the Punk Rock Food Drive and band members of local hard punk-rock band Parade of Horribles. Although punk rock isn’t the best descriptor, as their music is a little more, shall we say, complex. In this interview, they talk all about the Punk Rock Food Drive – how it started, what it’s like to put it together, and why they’re still at it after nearly 10 years. We’ll also have a chance to listen to a couple of their tracks and learn how they create such a full sound in a guitar-less two-piece, although they do have a guitarist join them in the studio. Posted on August 14, 2018 by AdminAugust 14, 2018
sweet tooth

For anyone attending the KAABOO Discovery Tour in Downtown San Diego, it was a very unusual experience. The venue was an urban park known as the Quartyard. It features a patch of faux grass, a wide range of alcohol, a place that serves flatbread pizza and burgers where the food is brought to you, and dogs. The event was the third and final part of a series of concerts held by KAABOO. From what was announced during the event, they each consisted of several local artists and bands competing to perform as part of KAABOO over at Del Mar. For this final event, it was a chance to perform on the same day as artists such as Katy Perry and Wiz Khalifa. It was hosted by Terry King of iHeartRadio, and while he said that the company was presenting alongside KAABOO, their brand was nowhere to be seen at the … Continue reading →

Blood Ponies, Hexa, and Parker Meridien Join the Collective

Posted on June 18, 2018 by AdminJune 18, 2018
Sunshine Sound Collective

We are excited to welcome Blood Ponies, Hexa, and Parker Meridien to the Sunshine Sound Collective! The collective is a loose affiliation of musicians doing something a little different in the San Diego music scene. From doing the podcast, I hear from just about every musician that they struggle with marketing and reaching their audience, so our hope is that we can use this platform to highlight experimental artists. As a nonprofit, we value creativity over record sales, and if we can do anything to promote music for the sake of music, innovation, and originality, we’re doing something right. I encourage you to check out all the musicians in the Collective. We will highlight these artists on our social media pages in the upcoming weeks. Also keep an eye out for upcoming shows and compilations. Do you know of any other innovative/experimental musicians in San Diego? I’d love to hear … Continue reading →

First 10 Episodes Recap

Posted on May 17, 2018 by AdminMay 17, 2018
Sunshine Sound Podcast Christine Mathias

Just a few months ago, an idea came to me from out of nowhere (as my ideas usually do): I should start a podcast. I like listening to podcasts, I like talking to people about their music and listening to local music, and maybe I could help musicians and further the mission of SSC, so why not? I didn’t really have any expectations going into it. In fact, I wasn’t sure anyone would agree to take time out of their busy schedules to come to our studio (i.e., a room in our apartment) to open up and share the all the behind-the-scenes stuff. But, what did I have to lose? So, I started contacting people, mostly through people I’ve met at Open Oscillator, Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego, and the Music Video Extravaganza (lesson #1: it helps to get outside your house and do things, even if you don’t … Continue reading →
